One of the greatest testimonies a believer can carry is exemplary behavior that reflects Jesus Christ.
A life that continually and consistently points people back to Him.
Once we accept Christ as our Lord and Saviour, we begin to walk with God and the Holy Spirit begins refining the way we live, speak, respond, and treat others. Sanctification. The pruning of dead branches removes what is unlike Christ while developing Christlike character so the world can see Him through us.
A tree is a beautiful reflection of spiritual growth, strength, and transformation.
What we see above the ground externally is only possible because of what is happening beneath the surface internally. Its roots must grow deep before its branches can grow wide. Through every season, the tree continues developing strength, stability, and maturity.
“He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water,
Which yields its fruit in its season
And its leaf does not wither;
And in whatever he does, he prospers.”
— Psalm 1:3 NASB
As a tree grows, it also goes through crown cleaning during the pruning season.
Crown cleaning is the process of removing dead, weak, diseased, or broken branches from the tree so healthy growth can continue. This process allows:
more light to pass through,
healthier development,
stronger structure,
and renewed growth.
Without crown cleaning, unhealthy branches can weigh the tree down and hinder its growth.
Spiritually, God often works in our lives the same way.
Just as a tree undergoes crown cleaning to remove dead or damaged branches so healthy growth can continue, the Holy Spirit works within us to shape our character, refine our behavior, and help us reflect Jesus Christ more clearly.
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Now those who belong to Christ Jesus crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let’s follow the Spirit as well. Let’s not become boastful, challenging one another, envying one another.”
— Galatians 5:22–26
Therefore,
Our attitude counts.
Our conduct counts.
Our words count.
Our integrity counts.
Our mindset counts.
People may never open a Bible before they encounter us, but they will observe:
how we handle pressure,
how we treat people,
how we respond when offended,
how we carry ourselves,
how we love,
how we forgive,
and how we remain anchored in faith during difficult seasons.
The pruning teaches us to reflect Jesus in both public and private moments.
Representing Christ should shine brightly in all we do.
Sometimes the greatest witness is our behavior.
A calm response.
A forgiving heart.
A servant spirit.
Integrity when no one is watching.
Choosing peace over chaos.
Extending grace with compassion, truth, and love.
These things reveal the work of Christ within us.
Scripture says:
“Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.”
— Matthew 5:16 NASB
The goal is for people to encounter something different in us and desire to know the God we serve.
Our lives should carry:
kindness that reflects Christ,
wisdom that reflects Christ,
love that reflects Christ,
and faithfulness that reflects Christ.
Every day, the Holy Spirit continues shaping us into His image and likeness.
Little by little:
We begin responding differently.
Speaking differently.
Living differently.
That is the beauty of a fruitful tree rooted in Christ.
“Remain in Me, and I in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit of itself but must remain in the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in Me.”
— John 15:4 NASB
