Longing for God

What does it mean to long for God?

Psalm 42 paints a powerful picture:

"As the deer pants for the water brooks,

So my soul pants for You, God.

My soul thirsts for God, for the living God..."

— Psalm 42:1–2 NASB

A deer pants when it is in desperate need of water.

It is exhausted.

It is weak.

It is dehydrated.

Water is essential for life.

Without water, neither the deer nor we can continue.

"But whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up to eternal life."

— John 4:14 NASB

Longing for God is recognizing our desperate need for Him.

His presence brings comfort.

His presence brings direction.

His presence brings joy.

His presence brings rest.

A need for His presence.

A need for His voice.

A need for His wisdom.

A need for His guidance.

A need for His strength.

A need for His peace.

A need for His love.

Longing for God is desiring Him above all else.

Seeking Him before the distractions of life.

Seeking Him before the opinions of people.

Seeking Him before the pursuit of worldly things.

Longing for God is looking forward to time with Him.

Opening His Word with expectation.

Entering prayer with anticipation.

Wanting to know Him more deeply.

Wanting to walk closer with Him than yesterday.

The more we know Him, the more we desire Him.

The more we experience His presence, the more we seek Him.

The more we understand His goodness, the more we long to be near Him.

For what we need most is not a thing.

It is the presence of God.
